Equine facilitated learning for children and young people in Wiltshire.

Welcome to
Stable Journeys

At Stable Journeys, we provide equine facilitated learning sessions for learners aged 5-16. Our environment is particularly suited to young people who find it challenging to thrive in a traditional, classroom setting. For example, children with SEN such as ASC, ADHD, SpLD and other SEMH needs. We are based in Worton, near Devizes and Melksham.

  • Our Sessions

As our learners build confidence around our ponies by feeding, grooming and leading them, I gently encourage them to develop their verbal literacy and communication skills through speaking and listening, in line with the English National Curriculum. Increased confidence in communication links to all areas of learning and helps our leaners develop the skills to self regulate, promoting well being and a sense of calm.

Being outside of a traditional class room, surrounded by nature, can lift the learning barriers that many neurodiverse children experience. Our sessions are designed to ensure that all learners go away feeling positive and successful in their learning journey.

All our sessions are tailored to the individual needs of our learners. I usually work on a ratio of two learners per session but also offer one to one sessions.

  • About Me

I am a qualified English teacher with experience in both mainstream and specialist schools. I also have a lifelong passion for horses, having been lucky enough to have owned and ridden them, since I was a young child.

Part of my working week is still as a teacher in school, so I see first hand how challenging the class room environment can be for some learners. It is this knowledge, combined with my passion for horses that led me to start Stable Journeys. It is so rewarding to see the way children enjoy interacting with the ponies and the confidence they gain from learning how to handle them.

  • Location

We are located in Worton, close to both Devizes and Melksham. We know that being outside in the natural environment provides a host of benefits for our learners. Our site is a beautiful green space, lined with mature trees and a haven for wildlife.

We have a large, sheltered space for working with the ponies but it is essential that our learners come prepared for the weather, with coats and wellies, unless it is very warm.

Our site is also home to a small flock of hens and two guinea pigs, our learners are welcome to help care for these animals within their sessions, if they would like to.

Meet the Herd

Dora

Dora is a particularly intuitive pony with a gentle, patient nature. She loves being groomed and having her tummy scratched. She also loves her food and will follow you anywhere for a treat!

Indy

Indy has been with us since she was weaned from her mum. She is the baby of our herd and has a cheeky, inquisitive nature. She loves attention and will stand to be groomed and fussed all day.
